About the Ideal Home Awards

The Ideal Home Kitchen Awards celebrate the very best in kitchen design, innovation and customer experience across the UK.

To be recognised in two categories is a fantastic achievement for our team and reflects our continuous hard work and everything we believe great kitchen design should be: creative, personal and centred around you, the customer.

Retailer of the Year

The Retailer of the Year category celebrates retailers that are redefining the customer experience through innovation, service and design.

Our Highly Commended recognition reflects the way we’ve challenged the traditional kitchen buying journey.

When we founded Smile Kitchens because we believed there was a better way to buy a kitchen.

Rather than relying on inconvenient showroom visits and sales driven processes, we built a fully digital experience that allows customers to design their kitchen from home, work directly with a dedicated designer and make decisions at their own pace.

We also put transparency at the heart of the Smile experience. Our designers don’t work on commission and every quote is fully itemised.

We don’t stop at kitchen design. We continue to work hard to support our customers once the kitchen is ordered.

From delivery through to installation support and aftercare, we stay involved throughout the entire journey.

Today, that approach is reflected in more than 500 Trustpilot reviews and a 4.8 star rating, making us the highest rated kitchen retailer in the UK.

Being recognised by the Ideal Home Kitchen Awards is a proud moment for our team and reinforces our belief that great customer experiences are just as important as great kitchen design.

Best Use of Colour

The Best Use of Colour category recognises projects that use colour in a creative, confident and meaningful way.

Oh boy, did we go bold!

Our Highly Commended entry centred around our collaboration with Dominic Skinner, a project that challenged the idea that kitchens should be designed around trends, resale value or what’s considered safe.

Instead, we asked a different question: how should a kitchen make you feel?

The idea began with Dominic’s love of a pink Smeg toaster, which sparked a wider conversation about emotional design.

Forget trends, we designed his kitchen around personality, joy and self expression.

The result was a bold pink and orange kitchen that truly reflected Dominic’s character. It wasn’t designed to appeal to everyone. It was designed specifically for him.

Reflecting on the project, Dom said:

“Smile literally opened the floodgates for me. I wasn’t constrained by the likes and dislikes of someone else running a kitchen company.

I came to a brand that was open to the idea of making colour really personal. And because of that, my imagination just… exploded.”

While colour became the defining feature of the kitchen, the project was equally focused on improving how the space worked for everyday life.

Izzy, the designer behind the project, said:

“Working with Dom on this project was an absolute joy! His original kitchen lacked storage and worktop space, and wasn’t functional for someone who loved cooking.

By redesigning the layout and adding smart solutions, we doubled his storage and opened up the space with wider worktop sections for food prep.

Corners became usable thanks to internal solutions, instead of being wasted. With a mix of wall units and open shelving, we met storage goals while creating space to display his favourite belongings.

Dom wanted his kitchen to spark a cherished memory every time he stepped in, and his colour choice made that possible. This bold statement was as important as functionality.

The result is a kitchen that’s fun, playful and creative, showing that small spaces aren’t a limitation but an opportunity to express yourself.”

The project went on to inspire The Colours Behind the Smile, our limited edition colour collection rooted in nostalgia and emotion.

The range includes Dolly Mixture, Cherry Cola, Pop Shock, Kitchen Kisses and Future Nostalgia, each designed to evoke joy, confidence and individuality.

What made this project particularly special was that the collection wasn’t created from trend forecasts or an existing colour palette.

It was built around colours that held genuine meaning, translating one person’s emotional connection to colour into a collection designed to inspire others.

The collaboration has also influenced the way we work with customers through our Colour Match Service

Whether it’s a favourite childhood sweet, a treasured photograph or an everyday object, we encourage people to start with what they love and build a kitchen around it.

Since launching the campaign, we’ve seen more customers embracing colour and arriving at design appointments with the confidence to make bolder choices.

That’s exactly what we hoped this project would achieve.

What Does This Mean for Smile Kitchens?

These awards are incredibly special to us. They recognise two things we’ve believed in from the very beginning: putting customers first and encouraging people to create kitchens that reflect who they are.

Whether we’re helping someone design a timeless family kitchen or a colourful space full of personality, our goal remains the same.

We want to make the kitchen buying experience enjoyable, transparent and inspiring.

For the Ideal Home Awards to recognise us as Highly Commended will motivate us to keep improving, keep innovating and keep helping more people create kitchens they’ll love for years to come.
